I don’t know about you, but I work hard all week and even harder on the weekend. I don’t seem to get anything marked off my to-do list unless I have an extra day off because the weekends just aren’t long enough.

What I don’t always realize is that staying aware of safety-related issues shouldn’t end when I clock out on Friday afternoon. Maintaining a safe work environment, whether at work or at home, should be my top priority for both the well-being of myself and my family, as well as my job.

Here are a few tips that should always be applied when working around the house to ensure you get back to work on Monday in one piece.

Workplace Safety Procedures That Can Be Applied at Home

  • Ladder Safety – Make sure the ladder is on a solid level base and never over-reach for something.
  • Eye Protection – Wear eye protection when weed eating, blowing leaves, cutting wood, and any activity that could send foreign objects into your eye.
  • Ear Protection - Wear a hearing protector if the noise or sound level exceeds 85 decibels, which translates into anything you have to yell over.
  • Clear Stairways – Remove clutter on stairways this might cause you to fall and hurt yourself.
  • Stretch Your Back – If you are planting flowers, painting, cleaning out gutters always stretch before doing any type of bending. Our backs are the one part of our bodies that will feel it in the morning and might put us out of work for several weeks. So make sure you stretch before you start any sort of bending.
  • Bend with Your Knees – When moving and lifting heavy objects be certain to bend with your knees. 
  • Sunscreen – Always apply sunscreen when working outside. Make sure you apply it to the kids as well!
  • Hydration – Drink small amounts of water frequently to stay hydrated and rest in a shaded area. Keep popsicles handy!

Take your time working around the house and think about keeping yourself and your family safe. If you aren’t able to safely do the work yourself, hire a professional. Don’t forget to include a little rest & relaxation time for yourself. Work safely over the weekend, so that you will be 100% on Monday to report to work.
