When one thinks of employee engagement, their minds tend to drift towards hard hats, oil rigs and various accouterments of the private sector. However, for-profit organizations aren’t the only ones benefiting from employee engagement practices. Those in the public sector are also making huge gains by engaging and recognizing their employees. While there are far too many examples to list here, today’s blog will focus on two public institutes that have experienced said success, all from Creating a Culture of Engagement at their organization.  

Being a coal miner is pretty hard work. The shifts are long, the job is tiring, and working conditions can be pretty dangerous. Still, day in and day out, these brave men and women go to work so that we can have the power we need to survive. And, considering the fact that nearly a third of the United States’ electricity is derived from coal, that’s a whole lot of men and women risking bodily harm, or far worse, just so we can keep the lights on.   

Although being a coal miner will always be a hard job filled with many dangers, there is a way to greatly improve working conditions and offer coal miners the level of safety they so rightfully deserve. We’ll get into HOW to achieve this a bit later in the article, but let’s first take a look at WHY working conditions are so unsafe.

Employee Engagement is critical to the success of all businesses, but it is especially important to those companies within the energy/utilities industry. When employees in this sector are not actively engaged, fines are levied, injuries occur, and employees & customers can lose their lives.

Sadly, energy employees are among the least engaged workers in the nation, ranking 11% less engaged than the national average. That’s pretty terrifying when you take into account that only 33% of the U.S. workforce is actively engaged.

In today’s article, we’ll take a closer look at what this means for energy companies in the U.S. From unnecessary injuries to increased fatalities, the impact can be devastating. Luckily, there is something you can do about it!

In 2017, it seems like everyone is talking about the power of Employee Engagement – and there’s good reason to do so. When your employees are engaged, your organization can achieve results you never thought possible. I won’t bore you with the statistics now (that will come later), but suffice it to say that study after study has found engaged employees lead to safer, more profitable workplaces.

What you don’t hear so much about is what happens when your employees are disengaged. The impact is just as great as having an engaged team, but the consequences can be – and often are – devastating. In today’s post, we’ll take a closer look at the cost of disengaged employees, how you can identify who they are, and – most importantly -- how you can help them.
